Derick Irukan is a passionate Kenyan media practitioner, scholar, and emerging communication leader whose work spans broadcast journalism, media production, teaching, and community mentorship. Born on 11 February 1999, Derick has grown into a dynamic communicator known for his discipline, creativity, and commitment to authentic storytelling. His journey reflects resilience and focus, drawing from both academic excellence and hands-on experience in the fast-evolving media landscape. Derick holds a First-Class Honours degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from Tharaka University, where he is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in the same field. His academic life is characterized by deep curiosity, critical thinking, and a desire to use communication as a tool for social awareness and transformation. Throughout his studies, he has demonstrated exceptional skill in research, scripting, broadcast presentation, and multimedia storytelling—earning recognition among peers and lecturers for both his academic strength and work ethic. His graduate-level work includes wide-ranging research interests, from digital media to peace communication, health advocacy, and the cultural dynamics of online platforms such as TikTok. Professionally, Derick has distinguished himself as a versatile media practitioner with strong studio, production, and reporting skills. His experience includes serving as a media technician, intern radio producer, acting manager, and later a part-time Journalism lecturer at Tharaka University. His roles exposed him to news writing, anchoring, program production, audio-visual editing, camera operation, and the technical management of a radio studio—all of which he executes with precision and creativity. His journey in broadcasting began at Tharaka University FM, where he volunteered from 2023 and later interned, offering exceptional service in production, student mentorship, and technical support. His effectiveness and consistent delivery earned him permanent employment as a Graduate Assistant at Tharaka University from September 2025. Beyond technical expertise, Derick is also a committed educator and mentor. He has taught Diploma-level journalism courses, guided students in studio production, assisted in HELB application support, and helped first-year students in onboarding processes such as university ID photography. His leadership extends to community roles, including service as a hostel caretaker, where he demonstrates empathy, responsibility, and strong interpersonal relations.
